Records, 1863-1988.

Records consist of catalogs, bulletins, newsletters, handbooks, directories, newspapers, journals, minutes, agreements, reports, memoranda, ledgers, press releases, flyers, programs, calendars, clippings, biographies, photographs, and other items from or pertaining to the Board of Trustees, the University Council, Swirbul Library, the School of Nursing, President's Office, academic departments and programs, the Faculty Senate, individual faculty members, Students' Association, Adelphi College Alumni Association, School of Social Work, and the School of Banking and Money Management. Some items relate to Adelphi Academy and to the Waldorf School, an elementary school affiliated with the College during the 1950s. Other items of note include documents from the Faculty-Staff Peace Committee pertaining to the Vietnam War, compiled in 1973; literature by students, faculty, and administration during the student strike of 1970, with letters from parents; architectural drawings from McKim, Mead and White for proposed campus building in Brooklyn, ca. 1920; architectural drawings from additions to Swirbul Library, 1977-1981; and audio tapes of Library programs and meetings and an oral history interview with Ruth Stratton Harley.

Adelphi College, chartered in 1896, grew out of Adelphi Academy, a boys' preparatory school in Brooklyn, established in 1863. It relocated to Garden City in 1929 and achieved University status in 1963. The University has been co-educational, except for the years 1912-1946, when it was a women's college.
